FREQUENCY OF EARLY COMPLICATIONS FOLLOWING ESOPHAGECTOMY FOR ESOPHAGEAL CANCER IN PATIENTS RECEIVING PERIOPERATIVE TOTAL PARENTERAL NUTRITION

Abstract
Objective: To compare the frequency of complications between patients receiving and not receiving perioperative total parenteral nutrition for esophageal cancer.
Methodology: This was a comparative study conducted from 1st May, 2007 till 30th april, 2010 at the surgical A unit, Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar, Group A included patients undergoing esophagectomy for esophageal cancer also receiving Total Parenteral Nutrition versus group B only undergoing Esophagectomy. The frequency of complications was observed by collecting data and entering it onto version 13.0 of SPSS for windows and analysis done using the chi-square test. A value of less than 0.05 was considered significant.
Results: Total of 174 patients were admitted and equally divided between groups. Both groups had similar mean age and sex ratio. The most common complication was pulmonary infection but the results were similar between both groups. Apart from anastamotic leak that was common in group B the results were comparable. But this complication was also not significant. (p=0.054).
Conclusion: Perioperative total parenteral nutrition is not warranted in patients undergoing Transhiatal esophagectomy for esophageal cancer as the frequency of complications and perioperative mortality rate is similar. A higher frequency of leak was observed in those not receiving TPN but this was not significant.
