Variation in Heart Rate with the Severity of Hypertension
Main Article Content
Abstract
Heart rate was determined in 53 Essential hypertension patients of variable severity from electrocardiagrams recorded in each patient. The patients were newly diagnosed or were off treatment for at least 2-4 weeks.
Heart rate of hypertension patients was compared with the heart rate in 30 normo-tensive subjects. There was a significant increase in heart rate of borderline and mild hypertensive patients (p<0.001), whereas the heart in moderate, moderately serve and severe hypertensives showed no significant increase (p>0.05); however, there were eight hypertensives in borderline and mild hypertensive group with no significant increase in heart rate. The finding categorizes the borderline and mild hypertensives further in two groups i-e hypertensive with and without change in heart rate as a contributing factor in hypertensive process. While treating hypertensive patients, heart rate should be assessed to achieve effective response.
