Retrospective and Prospective Study of 300 Goitre Cases

Abstract
A clinical study on 30 cases of goitre was carried out. Their ages ranged between 10-80 years. Males were 79 and females 221. 50.6 % had nodular goitre and 49.3 % had generalized smooth enlargement; 26 were carcinomas (8.6 % out of 300 cases). Amongst the non-malignant group, 6.7 %had toxic goitre and 93.3 % had non-toxic goitre or simple goitre. All these cases were treated surgically. The post-operative complications included haematoma 1%, infection 0.3 %, voice changes 0.6% recurrent laryngeal nerve damage 1%, parathyroid damage 0.3 %, tracheostomy 1.6%, respiratory problems 2%, haemorrhage 1.3%, thyroid crises 0.3%, difficult in speech 0.6%, tetany 0.3%, puffiness of face 0.3%, trachycardia 1.3% and spread of lymphoma 0.3%.
