Mananagement of Secretory Otitis Media in Children

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to know the different treatment options for otitis media with effusion. This descriptive study conducted at KTH, peshawar from from June 2003 to June 2004. Only the diagnosed cases of secretary otitis media were included in the study. After taking history and thorough clinical examination, routine investigations and special investigations such as pure tone audiometry and tympanometry were carried out to assess the severity of hearing loss and to confimr the diagnosis of secretary Otitis media. All patients were initially treated by systemic antibiotics, whereas in cases not resoonsding to systemic antibiotics in two weeks time, lympanostomy tubes with adenotonsillectomy was offered. The follow up of cases was carried out from 6 months to 12 monts. The children with secretory otitis media with effusion should have a course of systemic antibiotics; if effusion persists then surgical intervention in the form of myringotomy with or without grommet (tympanostomy tube) is advised.
